Norman Lear's All in the Family changed TV comedy forever and spawned a remarkable family tree of spin-offs, including The Jeffersons and Maude. Here's how to watch the whole universe in order.
Archie Bunker, the loudmouthed bigot from Queens, and his sweet wife Edith sparked arguments in living rooms across America when All in the Family debuted in 1971. The show topped the ratings for five straight years and tackled issues TV had never touched. Its characters launched hit spin-offs of their own, which in turn spawned more spin-offs, building one of the first great TV shared universes.
π Release Order
Release order shows how the Lear universe grew from one Queens living room.
- All in the Family (1971β1979)
- Maude (1972β1978)
- Good Times (1974β1979)
- The Jeffersons (1975β1985)
- Archie Bunker's Place (1979β1983)
- Checking In (1981)
- Gloria (1982β1983)
- 704 Hauser (1994)
Maude spun off from All in the Family, Good Times spun off from Maude, and The Jeffersons followed the Bunkers' former neighbors as they moved on up to the East Side. Archie Bunker's Place continues Archie's story directly.
π Story Chronology
The story chronology runs alongside release order, since every show takes place in its own broadcast era. Checking In follows the Jeffersons' maid Florence, Gloria follows the Bunkers' daughter, and 704 Hauser revisits the Bunker house with a new family.

Which Order Should You Choose?
Start with All in the Family, then branch out to The Jeffersons and Maude, the strongest spin-offs. Good Times stands well on its own. If you loved the Bunkers, finish with Archie Bunker's Place and Gloria. Fans can also check out ABC's Live in Front of a Studio Audience specials, which restaged classic episodes.
